CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Region is asking for your support - not in dollars, but in votes! Your vote will help decide the winner in the Art Van Million Dollar Charity Challenge. Register & vote for CAN each day until May 30 at www.artvancharitychallenge.com. CAN supporters: Choose either “Child Abuse & Neglect Council of Bay County” or “Child Abuse & Neglect Council of Saginaw County”. The top three charities with the most votes will win grants of $25,000, $15,000 or $10,000. Art Van Furniture will announce the winners on Friday, May 31, 2013.
For children of the Great Lakes Bay Region, the impact of the grants is immeasurable. For Saginaw County, the awards mean that a child in the “system” due to abuse or neglect will have a CASA to give him a powerful voice throughout Family Court proceedings. For Bay County, an abused child will receive a forensic interview in a child-friendly environment, minimizing further trauma. Voting for the CAN Council in the Art Van Charity Challenge ensures continuity of these services for the region’s most vulnerable children.
Remember, you can only vote for one agency per day.

August 7th turned out to be a perfect weather day to get the big bikes out on the road. The Kruisin’ 4 Kids Poker Run saw 138 motorcycle riders get together for a great run and lots of fun. Special thanks also to Blue Lakes Charter for providing a bus for those who did not have bikes to enjoy the festivities as well. Grand Central Bar and Grille hosted the event with bikers enjoying a delicious pig roast, great door prizes, and entertainment. Amy & Mike, as well as all their employees from Grand Central put in many, many hours to make the cruise such a great success. Although all proceeds have not been tallied, the Child Abuse and Neglect Council will receive nearly $3,000 from the event.
Among the many supporters of the event, Clor Cycle added a little fun by having a dunk tank at their store and hosted a drawing for a bike cover. Additionally, these supporter’s held their own events to raise additional dollars and sold ‘Put the Brakes on Child Abuse’ wall buttons: Coty’s Old Tyme Roadhouse, Drake’s Bar, Joe’s Bar, Flannigan’s Pub, Green Parrot, Bulldog Bar & Grill, Woody’s, Cody’s Landing, Joe’s Bar, Hill’s and the Backwoods Bar & Grill. In addition to several businesses who donated door prizes, Martin Chevrolet, Tom & Rayleen Lawler, and the Fordney Club made cash donations. Our lucky 50-50 winner promptly donated back all his winnings-thank you Tony Hupfer. Special thanks to Sam M. for getting together a grab bag for each biker and making collections on her own. Committee members Jennifer, Chris, Ken, Amy, Cathy, Catherine and Delores and all the event-day volunteers worked hard to make the event so much fun.

As a way to thank our amazing CASA volunteers, our annual CASA picnic was held on Thursday July 15, 2010 with 50 people attending. Not even an afternoon thunderstorm could put a damper on the festivities, and thanks to the use of the Saginaw Fraternal Order of Police building, everyone stayed relatively dry. Delicious food and good conversation was shared, along with “washer fishing” for the kids.
Winners of the gas cards in CASA Poker were Davona Carathers and Teresa Reed. Board Member Gail Shnurstein joined us for the evening and got to know a lot more about the CASA program. Thanks again for all of the hard work, hours of dedication, and for being there for the kids. We certainly appreciate all that you do!
Randy Roberts, CASA Program Director, recently attended the 29th Annual National CASA Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference provided extremely educational and important workshops to help us move forward with our program and provide support for the children in Saginaw County who are abused and neglected.
