I don't think you ever stop giving. I think it's an on-going process. And it's not just about being able to write a check. It's being able to touch somebody's life.

Bequests and Other Planned Giving

Contribute

In addition to the satisfaction that comes from knowing you have supported the CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Region and its mission, the best gifts can be planned to improve your financial and tax situation:

  • Income Tax Deductions
  • Reduction of Capital Gains Tax
  • Asset Management
  • Potential for Ongoing Income

Bequests

Leave a specific amount or a percentage of your estate to us through your will or living trust.  If you are considering making a gift by bequest, please meet with your attorney to discuss the ramifications and, if appropriate, to update your will.

Gifts of Securities

Stock that has increased in value is one of the most popular assets used for charitable giving, once it has been held for a minimum of a year.

Retirement Account

You can make a lasting impact on children by naming the CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Region as beneficiary or contingent beneficiary of an IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or other retirement account.  Please consult with your financial planner or attorney regarding considerations when making this type of gift.

Insurance Policies

Life insurance may be used to create a legacy by naming the CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Region as beneficiary or contingent beneficiary of your policy.  This requires that you complete a change of beneficiary form with your insurance company for an existing policy or name us as the beneficiary of a new policy.  This is a relatively inexpensive way to give a larger donation.  You do not have to work with an attorney or an accountant to make this type of gift.

Gifts of Real Estate

Using real estate, such as your house, farm or commercial property, to fund a gift allows you to preserve your cash assets, receive significant tax and income advantages, and make a larger charitable gift than anticipated.  Gifts of this type include:  Charitable Gift Annuity (receive a fixed annuity payment each year for life); Charitable Remainder Trust (increase your income, reduce your taxes, unlock appreciated investments, rid you of investment worries and ultimately provide very important support); Charitable Lead Trust (fund a trust that provides payments to the CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Region for a term of years and then pays the balance to your family members).  Please consult with your financial planner or attorney regarding considerations when making this type of gift.

Gifts of Savings Bonds

A major asset that may have stopped appreciating in value and now is collecting dust—an  easy, painless way to give.
