Last year in Saginaw County, 7,262 children were involved in reported cases of child abuse and neglect.  In addition, 1,140 children were confirmed abuse and/or neglected while 331 children live in “out of home care” due to abuse and neglect.  Since 1979, the CAN Council has been dedicated to stopping child abuse and neglect through prevention, intervention and advocacy programs and services.  In addition, we work to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect through special events like, “For the Children”.

2011 Child Advocate of the Year

Richard J. “Dick” Garber

On February 24, 2011, the CAN Council Saginaw County will celebrate the 18th Annual Mardi Gras (Saginaw Style!) Benefit Auction.  During this premiere fund raiser, we will honor our 2011 Child Advocate of the Year-Richard J. “Dick” Garber.  Since 2000, the CAN Council’s Child Advocate of the Year Award has honored eleven outstanding Saginaw County Child Advocates-this year is no exception.  It is a privilege to honor our 2011 Child Advocate of the Year-Mr. Richard J. “Dick” Garber.

For decades, our 2011 Child Advocate of the Year has been a true community leader in efforts to make Saginaw a great place for children.  As a business and community leader, Mr. Garber has been committed to the United Way, Saginaw Society for Crippled Children, YMCA as well as being an active advocate for our child abuse prevention programs and services.. This quiet, yet determined ambassador for our children has worked tirelessly to bring us the Saginaw Spirit, Crime Prevention efforts, spearhead the Great Lakes Bay Regionalization and so much more.  His professional and philanthropic accomplishments have been acknowledged with the Spirit of Saginaw Award from the Chamber of Commerce, the Mid Michigan Children’s Museum Brick Award and the Dr. Martin Luther King award, to name a few.

The 18th Annual Mardi Gras-Saginaw Style includes over 300 silent auction packages and a live auction with “once in a lifetime” experiences!  The benefit auction will be held at Apple Mountain Resort on February 24th from 6 - 10pm including a fabulous selection of hors d’oeuvres and surprise raffles throughout the evening!  Since 1979, the CAN Council has been dedicated to stopping child abuse and neglect in Saginaw County.

As of February 15th, we have put a hold on selling any more Auction tickets.  We are in the process of evaluating the total number of tickets that have been sold.  Check back each day to see if more tickets have been released to sell.
