Volunteering is a way to make a meaningful contribution to your community. CAN Council Great Lakes Bay Region is happy to help you find the right volunteer opportunity based on your interests and skills.

All CAN Council volunteers receive a thorough background check and an orientation prior to beginning their first volunteer assignment.

We have many different types of volunteer opportunities to consider:

50/50 Sales Rep: Volunteer will help sell 50/50 tickets at Saginaw Spirit Hockey Games (October through March). Free parking and admission to the game. For each game, a total of twelve volunteers are needed.

Admin Assistant: Volunteer will be a member of the CAN Council administrative team, assisting with special projects and clerical duties related to CAN Council programs and services.

CAP Month Champion: Volunteer will assist in the coordination of Child Abuse Prevention Month (April) within the Great Lakes Bay Region. Develop partnerships with businesses and schools to plant pinwheel gardens, assemble pinwheel gardens, make garden deliveries, attend kick-off ceremonies, and other campaign logistics. Opportunities begin in March.

CANbassador: Serve as a champion of CAN Council’s mission by representing our organization at outreach events, hosting facility tours, and being a CAN contact in your personal and professional network. CANbassadors are Friend-Raisers that will help grow awareness and attract new involvement in our organization.

Children’s Advocacy Center Internship:  Receive on the job experience in a human services related field (social work, criminal justice, family studies, etc.) 2-3 days a week in accordance with a college and university standards. Interns shadow the CAC Care Coordinator in learning how to build relationships in the community and learn resources to help those we serve. Overall goal for the students is to help children and their families begin the healing process of child abuse and neglect.

Beautification Team: Assist in either spring or fall clean-up efforts at both our Bay City and Saginaw facilities. Help the CAN Council beautify its outside to match its inside. If you have a knack for landscaping and like getting your hands dirty, this is the job for you!

Events Volunteer: Volunteer can fill various Special Event roles, ranging from day-of event setup, guest assistance, raffle ticket sales, and event tear-down. Volunteer may also choose to be involved in pre-event logistics.

Events Committee: Our Event Committees plays a key role in the planning in solicitation of corporate sponsorships and auction item donations for any of our annual fundraising events.

The Locker Volunteer: Assists in the organizing and sorting of donations for The Locker. Will serve as an associate of The Locker, greeting families as they enter the store and assisting them in finding the items they need. One hour of onsite training is required. Volunteers must be able to commit 4 hours/month.

CASA Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) are highly trained volunteers serving as the voice for children who are in the system due to abuse or neglect. In-house training and courtroom observations are required. Once sworn
in by court, volunteers average 20 hours a month advocating for a single child or sibling group.
